Sub-Zero is an American company, found in early 20 century by Westye Bakke. The company started in Bakke’s garage, where he and two other employees worked on producing freezers on a small scale. As the residential freezers market was slowly consumed by larger companies in 50s, Sub-Zero moved into producing commercial refrigerators. For example, Sub-Zero worked on creating simulators for Air Force for testing rocket engines in the conditions of low temperature and high altitudes. The company invested into new facilities in 1972. Sub-zero was employing about 100 people at this point. Westye Bakke died in 1973 and his son Lawrence Bakke became the new head of the company. Sub- Zero was reorganized; new management from other leading companies in the industry was hired. The company switched focus from commercial appliances back towards residential refrigerators and freezers. The new strategy in marketing made Sub-Zero a brand of high-quality, high-end refrigerators often owned by the celebrities. Sub-Zero was producing built-in refrigerators of various sizes, which could have custom client’s paneling. The company only had a very small market share among all refrigerator manufacturers, however it had its own niche and was rather profitable. By 1990, Sub-Zero sales reached $100 million.
