Amana BrandAmana was founded by George Foerstner in Middle Amana, Iowa in 1934, as a small company with only two employees, after the company founder was challenged by the local businessman to build commercial coolers. The original name of the company was Electrical Equipment Company, however it was renamed to Amana Refrigeration in two years. Over the time, Amana has developed into a recognizable international brand with the main focus in producing both commercial and residential refrigerators and freezers. Amana was the first company to start the production of side-by-side refrigerators, patented the technology of self-defrosting. In 1965 the company was purchased by Raytheon Company, who have developed microwave ovens and were looking for a reliable engineering team with experience in residential appliances in order to promote the new residential microwave brand Radarange. Amana Corporation was bought by Maytag in 2001, which in turn became a subsidiary of Whirlpool in 2006. Nowadays, Amana produces a wide range of appliances, including stoves, washers and dryers and dishwashers, however, it seems that refrigerators and freezers remain their top priority.
