Most Frequent Ice Maker Problems
Freezer Temperature is Above 10 Degrees Fahrenheit
Rather often, the problem with your ice maker can actually be caused by a malfunctioning freezer. Your ice maker wouldn’t be able to produce any ice if the freezer internal temperature is above 10 degrees F. In general, the recommended freezer temperature should be set between 0 and 5 degrees. Sometimes the problem with the freezer can be caused by a dusty condenser coil, which is located below or behind the freezer – and these coils have to be cleaned regularly. In addition, it would be a good idea to make sure your evaporator coils are not covered in frost or frozen over.
Malfunctioning Water Inlet Valve
The icemaker’s water inlet valve is an electronically controlled valve, which supplies the icemaker with water. A defective valve might result in the lack of pressure, or it can even completely block the water intake. This will prevent the ice maker from making ice. The water inlet valve requires the water pressure of at least 20 psi. In case the water pressure is sufficient, it may be a good idea to check the power supply to the water inlet valve with the multimeter. Sometimes the problem can be entirely mechanical, and in this case, we would advise to replace the water inlet valve completely.
Malfunctioning Ice Maker Assembly
Rather often, the problem can lie within the icemaker assembly itself. Unfortunately, the icemaker parts are rarely sold separately. In this case you will have to replace the entire assembly. Of course, we would suggest to first call a technician or manually check the water inlet valve, the water line and the fan before replacing the assembly, since these parts are often fixable and are easy to replace. Do not forget to check the freezer temperature – it should be below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. If none of these parts is at fault, you may want to replace the icemaker assembly itself.
