Is your washer not spinning properly?  Here is how to fix it.

If you turned on the washer, it started the cycle and after a while, you noticed that your washer no longer spins and it is full of wet clothes, this situation may be frustrating. As a first step, do not get upset. Just make sure that the problem exists.

Follow these simple tips to get your washer spinning properly:

  • Check whether the ‘no-spin’ mode is selected

If it is selected, your washer may not spin. Modes for wool and delicate clothes usually do not have the spinning cycle at all or spin the cloth a little. Using these modes help you to prevent the clothes from stretching or damaging.

  • Check whether the speed decrease is selected

If it is selected, your laundry can stay wet after spinning cycle. Some types of washers allow you to adjust the number of revolutions per minute. Perhaps, you accidentally reduced them.

  • Check whether the washer is draining water

If the washing machine’s filter is clogged, water has nowhere to go. Filter is designed to catch the items you have accidentally left in your pockets, which have fallen down the side of the drum. So when checking for a blockage, start from the filter. You can find it behind a flap at the bottom of most front loading machines. Сlean and rinse it thoroughly and your problem may be solved.

If you conducted all external inspection and your washer still does not spin, it is time to contact professional appliance repair technician. He will diagnose and repair your appliance.

Please, pay attention that in most of the cases washer does not have any additional signs which indicates the reason of the failure and it is required to use special equipment to find out it.

There is a list of things that might be causing your washer not spin properly:

  • Drain pump

If the pump is broken, the spin mode works fine but water does not drain to the sewerage. In this case, the drain pump should be replaced.

  • Water level sensor

If the water level sensor (pressure switch) is broken or malfunctioning, it cannot inform the control module about water level in your washer and whether the spinning cycle is needed.

In case the sensor does not work, the control module does not receive a signal that the water is still in the washer and the spinning cycle cannot be activated.

  • Control board

If your washer uses a drive motor belt and pulley to rotate the tub, a defective motor control board may prevent the tub from spinning. Contact appliance repair technician and he will inspect the control board for signs of burning or shorted out component.

  • Drive motor

The washer drive motor may be defective as well.  If the drive motor hums but fails to run, runs noisily or does not turn freely, you should replace it with a new one.

  • Lid switch assembly

The lid switch assembly is used as a safety device to prevent the washer from spinning when the lid is open. If the lid switch fails, the washer will not spin. To test the switch for continuity use a multi-meter. If the lid switch does not have continuity, it should be replaced.

  • Drive belt

For many washer models the tub is rotated by a drive belt. It connects the drive motor to the transmission in top load washers, or the drive motor to the wash basket in front load ones. Over time, the belt can wear out or break which will prevent the tub from spinning. If the drive belt is broken or loose on the pulleys, it should be replaced.
