Your microwave won’t heat? Here is how to fix it.
Microwave oven has changed the way we reheat and cook food. It made our life a little bit simpler. When your microwave stops heating your meal, it can be frustrating and jump you to a conclusion to buy a new one. There is no need to hurry, just read some tips to fix your appliance.
Follow these simple tips to get your microwave working properly:
-
Check if the correct program is selected
Press the ‘Stop/Cancel’ button, and then start the heating process again using a higher power level.
-
Check if your microwave is getting power
If you see “8888” or “PF” on the display, it indicates, that power was restored due to a power failure. To resolve this issue, just press the “Clear” button.
-
Check if your microwave is heating water
Fill a bowl with water and put a non-metallic object such as a wooden stick inside it. Place the bowl inside the microwave. Set the microwave to heat on full power for 60 seconds. Check whether the water is heated.
-
Dry out the circuitry
Over the range microwaves are installed above your range and may be affected by steam from cooking. Condensation collects on the circuitry and it can interrupt the heating process. Avoid cooking on your stovetop for a couple of days to dry out the circuitry.
Be aware that attempting to repair the microwave poses a substantial risk for electrical shock even after the microwave has been unplugged for many hours. Things that might be causing the issue:
-
Failed diode
A diode is an electrical device that allows current to pass in one direction only. It converts electrical A/C power to D/C, doubling the voltage to 5,000 volts. This voltage powers the magnetron to heat the food. You should contact a licensed appliance repair technician to test the diode.
-
Broken door switch
Usually microwaves have 3 or 4 switches. When you close the door, the switches activate and signal the microwave that it is safe to start. If any of the switches is defective, the appliance will not work. Door switch replacement requires a licensed technician as well.
-
Burned out magnetron
The magnetron is the part of the microwave responsible for heating the food you put into the microwave. It uses high voltage electrical power to generate the microwave frequencies which heats up your food. If the magnetron is burned out, you should contact a professional appliance repair technician to replace it.
Prevent door switch from failing following these tips:
- Push the “Stop/Cancel” button before opening the door when you want to take food
- Do not slam the door, even if you are in a hurry
According to research from Berkeley Wellness University of California, microwaves use less energy than conventional ovens and stoves because they cook faster and primarily heat the food, not the air.
