Is your dishwasher leaking? Here’s how to fix it.
A broken dishwasher is like a nightmare for many homeowners. Dishes need to be cleaned every day, and with a dishwasher that is not working properly – your kitchen can quickly become filled with dirty dishes. Leaky dishwasher can make you concern about buying a new unit, but do not worry: many dishwasher problems can be repaired by replacing parts or even just cleaning the appliance properly.
Follow these simple tips to get your dishwasher working properly:
-
Check that the dishwasher is leveled
The door seal of the dishwasher is not a complete seal and it is designed to deflect water of the door back into the tray. If the dishwasher is not leveled or it is leaning forward, it will raise the water level in the tray. In case it gets higher than the seal, water can leak out the front. So, make sure the dishwasher is completely level to avoid any leakage.
-
Check that the right type and amount of detergent is used
If your dishwasher is leveled and it still leaks from the front, it could be because of the problem with detergent. You have used either too much detergent or its wrong type. As a result, a lot of foam may leak out of the front. Use less amount of the detergent and run a limescale and detergent remover through the system. It will help you to flush any blockages and keep the system running properly. Keep in mind that you should clean a dishwasher with a proper cleaner on a regular basis.
-
Check if there is condensation forming in your dishwasher
Dishwasher can leak because of condensation forming. After the dishwasher has finished a cycle, you can get steam coming out at the gap in the top of the door. If the dishwasher is underneath a work surface, this steam can condense on the underside of the work surface and then drip down onto the floor. If you are finding this, just grab a cloth and give the underside of the work surface a wipe and this should help to avoid the problem. If you are finding that there is an excessive amount of condensation forming on the other hand, you might need to replace the door seal inside, because it is letting too much steam out.
-
Check the drain and inlet hoses
Leak can be a result of damage to both the drain hose and the inlet hose. If there is any tears or damage in the material, it will let water out. Also, check the washers on the ends of the inlet hose. If the rubber has perished in any way, they will not form a proper seal and that is going to let water out. Replace those parts as necessary.
-
Check your dishwasher for internal leaks
The base of the dishwasher is a very shallow tray, which is designed to build up water. Once water gets to a certain level, float will activate the anti-flood switch. You can check if there is any water in the base by tipping the dishwasher to one side. If any water runs out, that would indicate there is a buildup in the base. Remove any water and the float will return to its original position and deactivate the switch. Then you will be able to use your dishwasher again.

If your dishwasher leaking, here are things that might be causing the issue:
-
Defective water inlet valve
The water inlet valve allows water to enter the dishwasher at various times during operation. A defective inlet valve may be stuck in the open position, over filling the dishwasher and causing it to leak. Since inlet valves are not repairable, it should be replaced with a new one.
-
Broken wash arm
A cracked washer or support can force water under the door causing a leak. A new wash arm or wash arm assembly can be installed to solve the problem.
-
Cracked motor shaft seal
If the leak is coming from the dishwasher base, the motor shaft seal may have cracked. Depending on your model, just the shaft seal itself or the entire pump and motor assembly can be replaced.
-
Damaged sump seal
Most dishwashers use a sump to collect the water that enters the pump. A damaged sump seal can result in a water leak and will require the defective component to be replaced. To help identify a dishwasher base leak, use a drain pan floor mat, which will divert any leaking water to the front of the dishwasher.
-
Faulty door gasket
Over time, the dishwasher door gasket may lose its ability to seal the door properly allowing water to leak out. To eliminate the leaking from the door a new gasket can be installed.
